Split

Split offers something for everyone, including history buffs, fashionistas and foodies. While it is best known for Diocletian's Palace, the city also offers some of the best galleries, markets, shops and cafes in all of Europe. Split is an ideal home base for exploring northern Dalmatia, and lies approximately four hours from both Dubrovnik and Zagreb.

The city has a complex mixture of styles. It boasts Roman ruins, Byzantine arches, Venetian walkways and even has influences from Africa. Fig trees, olive trees and brilliant blue water remind you that you are still in the Mediterranean.
